Now that the Olympics are officially over, we’re back to vicariously living through our favorite jet-setting Instagrammers. Lucas Manente, aka @manentelucas on Insta, is pretty high on our list. Not only does he travel the world for his job, (he’s a Business Class crew with Emirates), Lucas gives all 63,000 of his followers an inside peek into his glamorous life in the skies.
We pinned him down for a quick Q&A about his favorite destinations and go-to spots around the world. Can YOU keep up?
How did you get into the airline industry? ✈️
When I was 19, a friend of mine asked if I ever thought of becoming a cabin crew, since according to her I had the looks for it. So I started started researching more and more about it and eventually that became my goal. So far, it’s been 7 years of flying, being the last 2.5 years in the middle east.
What are some misconceptions you had about working on airplanes before landing the job?
I thought it was going to be such a glamorous life that would only consist of traveling and meeting new people. It was only after a my first flights it dawned on me I takes so much hard work onboard and even when not flying (training, etc…). Not to mention having to deal with the constant jet lag, which is in my opinion the most harmful effect this job could cause on your body.
Speaking of jet lag, how do you overcome that and still stay positive and still keep that smile?
With all honesty I just learned that jet lag is not something your body will ever get used to. So I just learned with time that the most important thing is to listen to my body. If I’m tired, I sleep, if I’m hungry, I eat. I just give my body chances to recover when it needs to. If I’m tired and still need to be positive I try to keep myself hydrated all the time and drink lots of green tea. That keeps me going on the flights.
What’s your favorite destination for local fashion? 👠
As cliche as it might sound, for me there’s no place like New York when it comes to fashion. There are options for every style in the hustle and bustle of the best shopping districts.
What’s you favorite destination for food? 🍴
One the best sushis I’ve tried is in Seattle (not pictured). There’s a restaurant called Japonessa, and it remains my favorite restaurant in one of my favorite cities as well. Oddly enough, the best chocolate I have ever tasted you will find in Japan. It’s called Royce and it is an experience everyone should have.
What’s your favorite destination for one-of-a-kind items? 👜
They are souvenirs but I have to say it’s organic food. Every time I’m in South Africa I need to make sure I stop by Woolworths organic supermarket and stock up. Unfortunately, it’s been a while since I last went there.
What’s your favorite neighborhood in the world? 📷
Stein am Rhein in Switzerland. It’s a medieval small town 30 min from Zurich which is just stunning. Cozy and intimate.
What’s your favorite destination for meeting locals? 👫
Gili Islands in Indonesia. The most hospitable people you will ever meet.
Where are you based these days? 🌎
Dubai. The dates they have in this area you def can’t find anywhere else.
Where are you off to next and what’s the first thing you’ll do? 🗽
New York. I’ll just take a walk around Times Square and see what will happen from there.
